Personal Essay
Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to
adulthood within your culture, community, or family.
An event during my sophomore year shaped my view of the cultures of others and even my own. In fact, what
changed my life happened over a two week time period. As my sophomore year was coming to a close, our
French teacher asked anyone who wanted to learn more about a trip to Europe that was happening in the summer
to stay after class. Curiosity took over and I found myself listening to her talk about a trip of life time. I had to
somehow convince my parents to let me go. After practice I raced home and without even saying "hi" I showed
them the pamphlet. They both looked at me like I was crazy, but I had a desire to go that I have never felt before.
After weeks and weeks of begging, convincing, and planning, finally, they agreed to let me go. Before I knew it the
time had come; I was boarding the plane with a group of people from my school and my French teacher. While
traveling to Spain, France, and Italy I began to understand the ways of the culture over there. Whether you were
walking down the streets of Paris or riding a bus through Italy, you were always learning and seeing new ways of
life. I learned that the way we, as Americans, live isn't just the way people see the world. You always see different
cultures in Social Studies textbooks but experiencing it for myself further showed the uniqueness of various
cultures. Seeing the different architecture, food, cars, and even houses revealed to me a world I had always heard
about. Today I am more curious. As a child I did what I was told and my world was only what I immediately saw.
After the trip, I'm able to see the world as a whole and bigger than ever imagined. I thrive to see the world and
what it has to offer. I try to understand people and their ways of life. Those two weeks made me more curious of
our human culture and what opportunities are out there for me as I transition into adulthood.

For the past year and a half I have been working for the clothing store called Aeropostale. I am a sales associate
and a role model throughout the store. During my time at Aeropostale, I was able to increase the efficiency of time
management and the amount of responsibility.

Why Purdue?
Purdue is nationally ranked college for science, math and engineering along with medicine. I realize that Purdue
will push me to the best of my abilities and be able to teach me in ways I never knew were possible. Coming from
a small town but having the opporunity to see in other side of the world, I realize how many oppunrities this world
has to offer. I truly believe Purdue will prepare me for the future and allow me to succeed due to so many
opporunities.
Why Major?
I never wanted to be a doctor when I was younger. I could never stand the thought of someone else's way of life
depending on me. However, as I began to lead in volleyball, soccer and academics I began to believe in myself. I
realize that if anyone can change a person's life it will be me. Also, working at the Interfaith Shelter for the
Homeless I realize how much help people are in need of. Again, if anyone is going to help others and change
lives, it's going to be me.
