Song Analysis
Songs have musical elements such as rhythm, tempo, beat, pitch, melody, texture, and
harmony. The song I chose is Stay by Sugarland release in 2006. It is a country music in
Sugarlands album Enjoy the Ride.
Rhythm refers to the flow of music through time. It may move through time by joining
short and long sounds or by remaining the same as short or long sounds. Rhythm in Stay joins
whole notes with double and triplets creating a stable rhythm that is divided into unsteady pieces.
Tempo refers to the speed of the music. It is how quick or slow the beat of the song is in
motion with it. It can increase or decrease without having an effect on the rhythm. In the song
Stay, the tempo is moderato meaning moderate. A moderate tempo means that the song is
neither fast nor slow.
Beat refers to a usual, recurring pulsation that breaks the song into equal parts. A note can
last for less than a beat, whole beat, or more than a single beat. In Stay, the beat is in 4/4 with a
quarter note every single beat.
Pitch refers to the relative degree of loudness or softness that people in a song. It results
from the frequency of the songs vibration. A song with faster vibrations has a higher pitch than a
song with lower vibration. In Stay, Sugarland is pitched exactly with the musical equipment.

However, she lowers her pitch on dramatic words. In Stay, the melody is simple but sweeter
when compared to the ordinary tones that people speak.
Harmony refers to the way chords are build and how the follow each other. In Stay,
there is a well-matched frequency resonance of more than one note when Sugarland is singing.
Texture refers to how an individual hears one main melody follow chords. The texture in
Stay is homophonic because it has more than one note sounding simultaneously in agreement.
It is created by the acoustic guitar and Sugarlands voice.
