Reflective Essay
HON 1000 is a class about the city of Detroit. The course was pretty interesting,
but at the same time difficult to understand. The lecturer sounded very passionate about
the history of Detroit. Even though I lived in Detroit, I did not know much about it. This
course brought back the past of the city's urban development. I had chances to
participate on discussion topics in the seminars. The readings for this course are very
crucial. Majority of the topics the lecturer covers is based on the assigned readings.
In the seminar, we were assigned few small assignments and essays. First
assignment was to talk about "Eminem's super bowl Chrysler commercial." We had to
write about how it shows the reflection of the city's past and its people. Another
assignment had two questions based on a "fight club" video clip. I failed to keep up with
few readings and first two of my quizzes went wrong.
The seminar's instructor assigned one take home group quiz. The class went to
the Detroit Institution of Arts to analyze Diego Rivera's mural. Besides that, we had total
of three passport events we were required to attend: Eastern Market, Redford Theater,
and Hilberry Theater. I thought the course's main purpose was to think deeply about
how the past made difference to today's society. This course will help me to think better.
