Lesson Title/Topic: Indians


Standards: English 2.3- a) Use oral language to persuade, inform, entertain, clarify
and respond.
b) Share stories orally with an audience
c) participate as a leader and contributor in a group
Social Studies- 2.2 The students will compare the lives and contributions of three
American Indian cultures of the past and present, with emphasis on the Powhatan of
the Eastern Woodlands, the Lakota of the Plains, and the Pueblo peoples of the
Southwest.
Specific Observable Objective(s): Students will be able to work together with
their group to create their presentation.
Students will be able to look in books and take critical information about the
American Indians for their presentation.
Students will be able to present at least one piece of information they learned to the
class.
Essential Vocabulary:
Assessment: Students will do a presentation with their group where we discuss
what they learned. They will also fill in a chart in preparation for this.
Student Considerations: Some students will get an alternate sheet with pictures
as a primary source of instruction, they will also have teacher help writing details
about each picture. Students will be asked to name one thing about the Indians they
learned with a prompt such as Where did the Pueblo Indians live?
Instructional Resources, Materials, and Technology: Worksheets for
presentations and adapted worksheets, Chart paper, Markers, books on
each American Indian tribe.
PROCEDURES:
The Beginning: Students will gather at the carpet and will be broken
into three pre-determined groups. Groups will then be given the
name of the tribe they will be studying. I will explain to the students
that they will be doing some research about their tribes. The children
will be asked to find a workspace with their group and they will be

brought the books about the tribes they are working on. (10
minutes)
The Middle: Students will work together to complete their worksheet
for their presentations. I will walk around the room and assist as
needed. (30 minutes)
The End: Students will be called back to the carpet and asked for
volunteers to share about their tribe. If time does not permit all
groups to finish we will finish the next day. I will prompt students to
give all information if necessary.
