Lesson 1: Intro to Linear Measurement

Date: Nov. 3
Teacher: Emily Smith
Grade: 3
Subject: Math
Unit:
Data Relationships
Goal: Get students excited about Linear Measurement!
Materials: 3 sets of bocce balls, digital textbook on smartboard, whiteboards,
student textbooks, paper strips
Outcomes: SS3
Objectives: The students will communicate mathematically.
Background Information: This is lesson 1 of 11 linear measurement lessons.
Introduction
Meet at the carpet
11:00

Set

Let students know that we will be playing Bocce ball & Explain
the game
Divide the class into 3 groups

Activities

11:52

Take students outside to play Bocce ball in groups. While they

are playing, ask questions:
o Which ball looks like it is closest to the jack?
o How could the players measure to check which ball is the
closest?
o How many hand widths is the jack from the yellow ball?
o How would the numbers in the measurements change if
we measured with fingers instead of hand widths?
Go back inside and distribute whiteboards
Put up Drawing a Sailboat from the digital textbook on the
smartboard and respond to A. on whiteboards.
B. Distribute hard copy textbooks and turn to page 109. Use
fingers to measure the length and height. Which measurement
is greater?
C. Apply mathematical language (longer, shorter) to draw
sailboats on whiteboards.

Closure
Complete What Do You Think questions on whiteboards. Circulate to
check for accuracy.

Evaluation: Pre-assessment of students mathematical communication skills and

measurement strategies.
