Standards and Objectives
The students will learn how to effectively use technology to coordinate and plan a
large-scale event as well as reliable researching skills (data tracking, research skills,
scheduling, etc.); and learn more about the various cultures present within the United
States and their impact on the physical and cultural landscape of the nation. They will
accomplish this by putting on a multicultural heritage fair open to parents and the
community.
This assignment will correlate to Strand 4: Geography, Concept 4: Human
Systems PO 2. and 3. of the Arizona Social Studies Standard for Grade 8.
PO2.:Describetheeffects(e.g.,economic,environmental, cultural, political) of human
migrationsonplacesandregions.
PO3.:Describethecharacteristicsofvariousculturesthroughouttheworld.
The ISTE Standards for Teachers being addressed through the PBL Assignment
are Standards 1, 2, 3, and 5. These standards are Facilitate and inspire student learning
and creativity; Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments;
Model digital age work and learning; and Engage in professional growth and leadership,
respectively.
The ISTE Standards for Students being addressed through the PBL Assignment are
Standards 1, 2, 3, and 4. Respectively, these standards are Creativity and innovation;
Communication and collaboration; Research and information fluency; Critical thinking,

problem solving and decision-making.


The standards themselves only make use of describe which is a comprehensionlevel skill within Blooms Taxonomy. The students will go above and beyond the
standards, however, by organizing a multicultural heritage fair, which is a synthesislevel skilla much higher cognitive function. Another synthesis-level skill the students
will use is to design their iMovie presentation to be shown at the fair. The iMovie also
falls under the application-level skill by demonstrating or illustrating. The students
will need to utilize the higher-cognitive functions in order to meet the expectations of the
assignment.
