LBST2101

Syllabus Reflection

As a freshman, everything about college is new to me. Speaking for myself, I feel as if I
am adjusting quickly, but not efficiently. I have five courses this semester; Biology 1110, Math
1110, UWRT 1103, and this course LBST: Sexing Shakespeare. I reviewed the syllabi for this
course and the others.
Considering I will be assigned essays in this course, I decided to write this reflection
upon my UWRT 1103 course. Both courses require a number of essays throughout this semester.
This is somewhat overwhelming to me, but I am sure I can manage. The syllabi for the two
courses were both organized and were composed to help find information at ease. The
assignments are listed in order and given a due date.
Both the UWRT1103 and LBST course require time management, as well in other
courses. A lot of my courses incorporate an online program for assignments, other than Moodle.
With this is in mind, I need to provide myself with ample time to complete the assignments for
those classes, as well as my UWRT1103 and LBST course. To help with my time management, I
purchased a desk calendar. I have already started filling up this calendar with upcoming
assignments, quizzes, and exams. To supplement this calendar, I have also entered these into my
cell phone. I know I will always have my phone with me.
In addition to time management, this course and my UWRT1103 requires writing some
sort of essay or paper. With this in mind, I need to work on my writings. This has been a
weakness for me since high school. I think having these two classes within the same semester is
an advantage for me. My UWRT1103 focuses on literacy and writing. Therefore, I can apply the
skills that I learned in that course, to essays assigned in LBST. If the assignments in UWRT
arent enough to increase my writing skills, my professors have each introduced me to some sort
of writing resource. I can utilize the Writing Resource Center to supplement these classes.

For my LBST course, there are some skills I need that arent exactly beneficial to my
UWRT course. I need to expand my comprehension of Shakespeares writing because within his
writings, there are deeper meanings. Quite often, I do not notice these meanings on my own,
rather when the professor points it out. I think if I can increase this skill, it will help me make
connections to modern day scenarios and Shakespeares writings a lot easier than before. Also
for this course, having an open mind will benefit you. Within the past few lectures, Dr. Britnalls
lectures have made me realize things that I didnt before. It has changed how I think about
sexuality, gender, etc. Having an open mind about these topics help me to understand others and
their differences. It also, helps me make connections.
In my UWRT course, there are plenty of blog assignments. I am not familiar with blogs.
My professor has posted examples of her former students blogs for us to look over. We are also
creating websites for these blogs. Due to a class I took in high school, I have a little more of an
advancement in the website making.
Each of these courses require certain skills that I either have, or need to acquire. Using
what I learned in these courses could help me think broader about situations. I can make
connections to scenarios others may not have noticed. These skills can also be used in the
advancement of my college goals.
