RI.1 Key Ideas and Details: Ask and answer

questions about key details in a text

LessonScenario
The teacher will show the students the connection between
organizational features in print such as chapter headings, bold type,
and table of contents in texts and online print. The teacher will show
them this by using a Promethean board or a projector to pull up
websites with online print and then showing the connection between a
chapter heading and how it will relate to the overall summary of a
chapter or showing a table of contents and how it lists all of the
chapters in order. The teacher will then ask all of the students to get a
book in the classroom and locate at least one of the organizational
features. The teacher will then go around and check on each student
to make sure they found the correct item and help them if they did

not.
Next, the students will read the story, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by
Eric Carle. The students will summarize the story and what they have
learned about caterpillars by picking out descriptive words used in the
story. They will put these words on a graphic organizer. They will also
be asked to find an organizational feature in the book. Lastly, using an
online drawing program such as Kid Pix Studio, they will draw a
caterpillar and write descriptive words about it.
