Kashmir Case Study

1. Historical origins of Kashmir include conflict between India and


Pakistan. A decision of the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir to join his
province to India instead of Pakistan. These two nations fought wars
over Kashmir, which resulted in the breakup of Pakistan and the
development of Bangladesh.
2. Religion was a very big identity marker in Kashmir; it showed whom
you represented and what outcome you believed in, whose side you
took in the wars. Muslims made up 95% of Kashmirs population, which
is why conflict arose when they became part of India because of its
Hindu leader.
3. Kashmir became a place for religious suites and tourists from the
other parts of the world after the wars ended. It became a crucial
pilgrimage site for Hindus.
4. These wars were hard for Kashmir to survive, with its people fighting
over what to do, education became tougher along with segregation,
and the economy was rough.
5. Religion influenced people to act out as the rest of their side did. If
you were one religion in Kashmir, then you stood up for what you
believed in for that religion and whatever outcome you wanted.
Religion was the cause of segregation in Kashmir. People acted out
because they wanted to protect what they believed in.
