‘To Whom It May Concer:
{tis my immense pleasure to speak on behalf of Katherine Orrell. Katie was the student teacher in my classroom at South Kortright
Central School from September 8, 2015 through October 23, 2015. She was responsible for teaching students in Pre-K through
Grade 12, Katie taught classes in General Music for Grades Pre-K through 5 and Chorus fr Grades 5 through 12.
\When | think of Katie two words immediately come to mind, kindness and professionalism. Katie has a gentle, caring personality
‘that makes her extremely wel suited for teaching young children and children with special needs. She took the time to really listen
When the children talked to her and responded in a thoughtful and supportive manner. Katie was particulrly gifted at working one
‘on one with students. She guided and assisted students individually as they worked on composition projects in Grade Five General
“Music classes, Katie always volidated the thoughts and opinions ofthe students even when she needed to steer them ina different
slrection in order for the students to complete the project successfully. Itwas clear to the students that Katie valued them as.
nique and special human beings and truly cared about them as individuals,
Katie exhibited the utmost professional behavior during her student teaching placement at South Kortrght Central School. She
arrived promptly each day and often stayed afterschool to prepare for future lessons or to conference with me concerning a lesson
that | had observed. Ketie attended a conference day fr teachers on September 3, 2015 which was before offically beginning her
student teaching placement. She attended Open House on September 18, 2035, greeting students, getting to know parents and
assisting me in distributing pamphlets concerning standards based grading to each child and their parents. Katie also participated in
2 work day atthe Hartvck Music Library with music teachers from the Delaware County Schoo! Music Association. She will be
returning to S.K.CS, on December 21, 2105 to conduct two pieces inthe Holiday Band and Chorus Concert. Katie certainly went
‘above and beyond to full her obligations as a student teacher.
Katie diligently worked tothe best of her ability in the lessons she taught. She was interested in suggestions to help develop her
‘teaching skills. Katie was willing to try new ideas with the goal of improving student achievement. Ths willingness to learn is
essential for success in the field of education.
Katie wrote lesson plans that were well organized with attention to detail ensuring her preparation for each class. Teaching general
‘musics a daunting task because ofthe amount of materials needed for each lesson as well as the shifting mindset needed to relate
‘to different age groups of students throughout the day. Katie was able to maneuver through the day smoothly and use the time
Biven to teach each lesson efficiently and effectively.
Katie developed the ability to construct lessons that were logical and straightforward inthe delivery of instruction while containing
‘music and activites witha high level of student interest. Students were able to master the musical concepts incorporated in each
lesson while having fun and developing a love for music. Katie's excellent musical sklls were the foundation that aided her in
