Question:
c)What does the phrase,a place rooted
in the sweet nostalgia of the fifties unsophisticated, basic, raw - a place
where anybody could be somebody, a
place still clinging to all the tenets of the
American Dream, however wobbly they
had become. p.9-10
d)What might be a good title for
this portion of the text?

The standing ovation that he received at

the Watermelon Feed wasnt particularly
surprising. Just as he was used to football
injuries, he was also used to lavish
attentionp.13

Response:
This phrase means that those who live in this town
wont change their ways they live by tradition and
memories.

Basically the kings, the team is loved in such a

way.

f)What is the most important Its all i ever wanted to do Nothing more in the
word/sentence/paragraph?
world maters to Boobie than football.
I wont be able to play college football,
man . . . Its real important. Its all I ever
wanted to do. I want to make it in the pros . .
. .p.20
k)Why is this material important?

Ive spilt more whiskey than most

people have drunk . . . I wouldnt have
married a couple of girls I married . . . .
p.36
h)Has anything in the text
changed your way of
thinking?
He responded without the slightest
hesitation. 'A big ol dumb nigger.'
p. 49

Well this is giving back ground on the character and

basically his life isn't the best a person would ask
for.

Yes the times have changed and here in the west

we don't have racism issues nearly as bad in the
midwest.

k)Why is this material important? Charlie

This is important because a lot of high school
Billingsley found out that life in college was athletes go through his reality check. They can be
a whole lot different you were a whole lot the best in their school but then wants the move to
more expendable in collegethere was
the big leagues in college a lot changes.
always a bunch of guys ready to replace you
in a second.
p. 63

b)What is the authors purpose or

perspective? He fit every stereotype of a
dumb jock, all of which went to show how
meaningless stereotypes can be.
p. 127

No mater how good the player and grades what it

comes down to is the person themselves and Brian
Chavez was recognized for breaking the stereo type
by his teammates.

j)What do they mean to you personally? My

values have not changed a bit since I was
your neighbor in the fifties. My values are
values like everyone here that I think of:
faith , family, and freedom, love of country
and hope for the future. Texas values.
p. 177

What this means to me personally is the author is

taking real world positions and putting them in the
book making it a work of the ties in which it was
made in.

a)What is the main idea or

Basically he has his values straight. Success is
underlying value in the text? different in his eyes than others. He likes to focus
"Aaron Giebel had begun work on his house on personal things.
although calling it a house was the same as
describing the Statue of Liberty as a
figurine. It was as he said, 'a salute to our
success.'"
p. 206
h)Has anything in the text
changed your way of
thinking?
Ive got no idea what I want to do. Ive got
no idea what school I want to go to. My SAT
wont be worth a shit. And no football school
wants me.
p. 308

Not much in this has changed my thinking. really i

used to be in the same boat about two months ago
but thankfully i was able to get ahead and give my
last ditch effort to get into some big four year
school.
