Dear Amanda Vigil:

My name is Kayla Taylor and I am applying for a speech language pathology internship
that was advertised through ASHA (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association). I am
currently an undergraduate student at the University of New Mexico. I am double majoring in
speech and hearing sciences, as well as psychology, with a minor in family studies.
I have personal skills that would greatly contribute to your internship program, which will
differentiate me from the others in my future endeavors. I have great communication skills with
people of all ages, children especially, and have a way of connecting with people very quickly
after meeting them. I am very optimistic and have a positive outlook on all situations, and bring
contagious energy to the people around me. One of my ultimate goals is to make people have a
sense of happiness, accomplishment, and motivation.
At age 14 I was hired as a gymnastics coach at Eagle Ridge Gymnastics. I worked there for
three and a half years and coached children of various levels ages 2-12. This job helped me
discover that I love working with children and wanted to continue doing it. By being a gymnastics
coach I also learned that I loved seeing improvement in people, and I saw a lot of it as a coach; not
only on the gymnastics side of things but also the childrens communication skills, mannerisms,
responsibilities, and many other areas. For a short time period at age 19, I was a nanny of an only
child. She was four years old and had a speech delay. I had the opportunity to work one-on-one
with her throughout the days. This helped me gain a greater understanding of how to be creative
while working and communicating with children with delays and disorders.
At this time I have taken three psychology classes and four SHS courses. I have earned
high grades in these particular courses. These classes are just the beginning of everything that is
to come and so far I am highly interested in every topic we have discussed. One of my courses was
specifically about communication disorders, which I found especially interesting. For this same
class we had extra credit opportunities with completing observation hours at the UNM SHS clinic
and I loved doing that. It will also go towards my undergraduate observation, which is one of the
requirements before going to grad school.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Kayla Taylor
