Early Learning
When I was a child I always disliked having to lear to read and write. Unless a book
was about one of my interests, I did not enjoy reading it. My mom was the main person that
helped me lear to read and write before I started school. She would always sit with me and
make sure I was actually reading the book like I was supposed to be doing. Instead I would
usually daydream and stare off into space, so it was nice to have her there to keep me on track. I
also remember her teaching me how to write out simple words, and spell my name. The most
significant story I remember reading was Go Dog Go by P.D. Eastman, I used to love that book
and I would read it all the time. It was about dogs who could drive racecars. Growing up I had
an older sister and brother, so they always helped me with my reading and writing too. Coming
up through school, reading and writing was always somewhat difficult for me. When it came to
reading I just never had the attention span to actually want to sit down and read. With writing I
always liked to have an assigned prompt because I would waste too much time thinking what I
should write about with an open prompt. When I went into tenth grade, I had an English teacher,
Ms, Battista, The way she taught her class was difficult at first, but eventually I got the hang of
it, Her class made me a better writer, and I have not had as much trouble with it ever since. We
would do quick writing prompts every class, so eventually I got better at using my imagination
My tenth grade year was probably my best year of improvement for reading and writing overall.Henderson 1

My Profound Moment
Everyone has different influences in their lives that make them who they are, Just like
everyone has different things influencing their writing. That is why everyone's literacy
narratives will be different. When I was younger I always disliked English class in general
Reading and writing were never my forte. Coming up through school I always had difficulty
witlfeading and writing. I didn’t have the attention span to read a book because I would always
bored. I never liked writing either, I always found it difficult to come up with something to
write, When T got into tenth grade I had an English teacher named Ms. Battista, she was my
eleventh grade English teacher too. At first I found her class to be very difficult. But eventually
1 got used to all of the writing and I was fine, Having Ms. Battista as a teacher for two years
gave me a good chance to get to know her well. Whenever I had any questions about anything I
would always ask for her help. She was one of the biggest factors that influenced my reading
* and writing, We would do timed writing prompts in her class every day, and that is what made
mea better writer. I eventually got used to having to come up with topics to write about and it
really helped my writing. She was also a very hard grader, so knowing that I would work even
harder to try to get better grades, After her tenth grade class English went from being one of my
lowest grades to one of my highest grades. I was excited to see that I would be having her again
in eleventh grade because I already knew her style of teaching. Plus I knew it would give meHenderson 2
‘more time to improve my writing skills. Ms. Battista, my tenth and eleventh grade English
teacher was the main influence on my literacy skills today.Henderson 1

Learning with Technology
Over the years technology has increased immensely. Back in my parent’s childhood it
would have been much more difficult to practice basic reading and writing. It is so common for
people to have books just laying around, even pencils and paper. But it did not used to be that
way. Technology has greatly influenced my Literacy Narrative without me even knowing about
it. It would have been difficult to simply write a research paper before we had computers and the
internet. Now all I have to do is search a topic and I'm on my way. Growing up in my
generation made it much easier to learn to read and write. I had all the basic necessities like
books, paper, and pencils. When I was a child I disliked reading and writing in general, but
technology has made it much easier to learn. Overtime I have grown to like it more because of
technélogy. On the internet, there are millions of books at my fingertips. I can open a word
;cument and just start writing something anytime I want. Fe is a huge advantage over what
my parents had growing up. They would have had to go to the library and rent out Books justto
uyead, NOP Dsayravrs

My Crazy Grandpa
Everyone's family always has that one crazy person. In my family, it would be my
grandpa. Now, I wouldn’t go as far as saying he is crazy, but he is a little more on the wild side
0
than most of my family. His name is David Lewis Henderson/84)years old. He is tall with grey
hair, and he always has some scruff on his face. He wears button-down shirts, khakis, and
cowboy boots on a daily basis. And-he always has one pant leg up because it gets stuck on his
boot and he never fixes it! My grandpa was raised in a pretty normal family. He was one of ten
children. After he finished seventh grade, he dropped out of school. He was in the Korean War
in his early adulthood. Eventually, he went on to start his own construction company. His
comppfiy, Henderson Construction Company, started out as a house building business. It later on
formed to a road building business, and continues to produce some of the finest roads in
Virginia, He would still go to work every day up until this year. My grandpa is one of those
people who love telling stories. He has lived a long happy life full of adventures, so he loves to
share it with people. He also has many funny saying that he says all the time, Every time I talk
to him I learn something new about him. At the moment he is “blind in one and can barely see
out the other,” as he would say, yet he still drives wherever he needs to get with no problems. yikes G
My grandpa may be a little bit coo coo sometimes, but he is still a very smart and wise old man.Henderson 1

Family Naming in Different Cultures
The family name is very important all around the world. Families in different cultures
have many different traditions of naming offspring and continuing their family name. In the
United States, I'd say itis rather simple, In most cases, people in the U,S ,give their kids a first
name, middle name, and their last name, Some parents name their children after themselves,
with gither the child’s first or middle name, but the last name is always the same as the parents.
‘some cases, fathers will name their sons after themselves. In my family, my grandpa’s name is,
David Lewis Henderson. He named my father after himself, so my father’s name is the same,
but with a Jr. on the end. My father named my brother after himself and my grandfather, so my
brother's name is the same, but with III on the end. It is common in the U.Ssto have sons named
after their fathers. When women get married to their husbands they have a few options. They
can keep their last name the same, take their husband’s last name, or hyphenate both last names
Sometimes like in my mother’s case, women will take their husband’s last name and make their
maiden name their middle name. When they do this, they lose their middle name. Ifa woman
doesn’t take her husband’s last name, naming the baby could be more difficult. Then the parentsHenderson 2
have to decide whether they want their baby to have their mom’s, dad’s, or both last names. In
other cultures, naming can be much more complicated.Henderson 1

Country of Origin
never knew any of the places my family came from until I stared this project. I guess I
just never really thought about it, and was never really interested. After doing some research I
found it really interesting. One family’s country of origin is England, England’s flag is a white
background with a red cross, ‘The red cross is derived from St. George’s Cross, which can be
traced back to the middle ages. In 1188 Henry II of England and Phillip Il of France went on a
crusade. Henry used a white cross and Philip used a red cross. Red crosses were worn by
soldiers under the reign of Edward I. The flag of England was used as one of the main points in
va flag. Many churches in England have the St. Georges flag, The flag is also flown at
sporting events, One interesting thing about England is that it has no official national
anthem, Many people use the song God Save the Queen to fill the role, but there is no official
song. One way to become a citizen of England is called Naturalisation. There are many
standards you must meet to qualify to become a citizen through Naturalisation. You must be
eighteen years old, have lived in England fr( ears before the date of your application, and
many more standards like those, I would not be able to become a citizen of England right away.
T would have to live there fof 5 }ears before I apply, so I will probably never become a citizen ofHenderson 2

Project Interest
Out of all the projects and writings that we have done, the Family Tree Project is the one
Thave most enjoyed. I found it to be the most interesting project of all of them. I have always
been curious about my family heritage, and I loved researching it. At times it was difficult to
find correct formation, but it was still very enjoyable. Through completing my family tree 1
learneg/ lot about how to research effectively. Hopefully that will help me with my Semester
multi modal project. It was fun researching about my family tree because it was like I was
Iving a mystery. I got to lear things even my parents did not know about our family. It is
always good when you are working on something you are interested in because then it doesn’t
feel like work. It is fun. 1 think that I will have fun researching and learning new things about
my topic for my Semester long multi modal project. I am very interested in cars and the
technology that goes into them. So far I have enjoyed learning about innovations in the
automobile industry, and how they have affected our lives. There is an endless amount of
information out there, so the hard part will be deciding what to include in our presentation.
I like when we get to pick our own topics to research about, because when I am passionate about
the subject, I will produce a better project in the end.

Project Information Discussion
For my semester long multi modal project, I am doing the Progression of Technology in
Cars, I talked to my one of my roommates, Alex, about the content of my presentation. I found
that talking to Alex about what I could add to my presentation to be very helpful. I thought I
covered most of the general things about my topic, but he pointed out a few things I left out. He
also brought up a few ideas that I could talk about during the presentation. One of the major
simple things that I left out was the invention of the seatbelt. I thought I had all the big safety
feattires of a car, but that is one that I left out. Some other things that he mentioned were self-
“riving cars, electric cars, and flying cars. After talking about the content, I realized I'm going
to have to add more slides to my PowerPoint. I am going to add information about the seatbelt,
self-driving cars, and electric cars. I will probably add information about the failures of different
inventions also. Something else brought up was the effect that the racing industry has on the
automobile industry. Alex wondered if innovations in the racing industry are ever used in the
automobile industry also. I was just planning on covering many of the basic inventions that
made cars safer and more user friendly or reliable. Now that I had a discussion about what else 1_—
Henderson 2
could include, I will have a lot more information to put into my presentation. Talking about my
project was very helpful.
