The American Society of Radiologic

Technologists (ASRT) is more than just
a mouthful of scientific terms. The organization has recently opened a museum in
ABQ that allows for interactive and challenging learning opportunities, geared towards a multitude of audiences, children
included. The ASRT museum highlights
the history of radiologic technology, its
progression over the years, and modern
exhibits of how the technology is used
today.
Along with radiation therapy treatment, X-rays are even used for art! Frances Apple, a retired radiologist, now incorporates radiologic technology into art
pieces by taking X-ray images of flowers.
Large-scale photos of these pieces are displayed in the center of the museum.

The first fluoroscopy, invented by Thomas

Edison, was used extensively before he realized that staring straight into radiation is

actually not the best for the eyes.

Pioneers like Marie Curie, William Coolidge,

and Nikola Tesla all contributed to the im-

portance of X-ray technology.

At the ASRT museum, you can try on old

safety gear that was used to reduce radiation exposure in the 1950s. Hands-on

displays like this one intensify the learning

experience.

Its hard to fully appreciate modern

technology without knowing how it came
to be. This museum features an exhibit that
compares MRI scanners and other machines

side-by-side to how far the technology has come

over the years.MS

The Gildan New Mexico Bowl has come a long way

since its first game in 2006.
Jeff Siembieda remembers when New Mexicos first bowl game was announced to the public. People were skeptical, he says.
I think I was probably the only one stupid
enough to think this thing would make it in
the long run, says Siembieda, Gildan New
Mexico Bowl executive director.
But it worked, and continues to work, as New
Mexicos first and only college bowl game turns 10 this
year. The vision for the bowl game, Siembieda says, has always been
to create a long-lasting, economy-boosting event that shines light on the Land of
Enchantment. I think weve been able to hit all those objectives.
This years game, which takes place Dec. 19 at University Stadium, pits a Conference USA team against a Mountain West Conference team, and will kick off the
2015 college bowl season. There will be events throughout the week leading up to
the game, including a pep rally and Battle of the Bands the day before the game
at Old Town at 4 p.m.
The Gildan New Mexico Bowl is part of the holiday season, Siembieda says. I
think over [the past] decade, weve started to create a tradition. ARB
