Assignment
Due date: 27/11/2015

1. (5 points) A receiver is moving at a speed v and is receiving signals arriving along two reflected
paths which make angles 1 and 2 with the direction of motion. The transmitted signal is a
sinusoid at frequency f.
(a) Is the information given above enough for estimating: (i) the coherence time Tc (ii) the
coherence bandwidth Wc ? If so, express them in terms of the given parameters. If not,
specify what additional information would be needed.
(b) Consider an environment in which there are reflectors and scatterers in all directions from
the receiver and another environment in which they are clustered within a small angular
range. Using part (1), explain how the channel would differ in these two environments.
2. (5 points) Prove the following upper bounds for the PEPs (details as discussed in the class):
(a)
Pr{XA XB }

L
i=1

1
1 + SNRi /4

N R

Note: {i } are the eignevalues of the matrix (XA XB )(XA XB )H . This is different
from the definition in the textbook.
(b)
Pr{x1 x2 }

16
SNR kx1 x2 k4
2

See the Eqn. 3.91 and 3.92 and the related discussions in the book by Tse and Viswanath.
3. (5 points) Consider a fading channel with the following parameters: Doppler spread is 0.01Hz
and multipath delay spread is 1 sec. Assume that 5Hz bandwidth at bandpass is available for
transmission and a transmit pulse with duration of 10Sec is used.
(a) Compute the coherence bandwidth and coherence time of the above channel?
(b) Is the channel frequency selective? Explain.
(c) Is the channel fading slowly or rapidly? Explain.
(d) Suppose that the channel is used to transmit binary data antipodal coherently detected
PSK in a frequency diversity mode. How will you use the available channel bandwidth to
obtain frequency diversity. Determine how much diversity is available.
(e) Compute the approximate SNR required per diversity to achieve an error probability of
106 .

4. (5 points) Consider a diversity receiver with L antennas employing selection combining. Recall
that in selection combining, signal from the ith antenna such that i j , j = 1, 2, , L, where
k denotes the SNR of the received signal at kth antenna, is used for detection. Assuming
Rayleigh fading and BPSK modulation:
(a) Determine the average output SNR (i.e., SNR at the output of the combiner)
(b) Determine the overall error probability.
