Thefiveapproachestomulticulturaleducationasdescribedinthebookare
somewhatinorderfromwhatGrantandSleeterfoundtobeleasteffectivetomost
effective.Thefirstapproach,TeachingExceptionalandCulturallyDifferent,hastheend
goalofgettingstudentsinapositiontomeetthetraditionaldemandsoftheschooland
Americanlife(Poetter93).Inaclassroomthiswouldmeanthatamulticulturalstudent
wouldbetaughtwiththengoalofmainstreamingthatstudentbackintotheclassroom
withAmericanideals.Thisapproachiscriticizedforitsassimilationandseeingthe
childscultureasadeficiencythatneedstobemadeup.
Thesecondapproach,HumanRelations,focusesoncreatingconnectionsamong
allstudentsandcreatingaharmoniousenvironment.Intheclassroomthiswouldlooklike
studentslearningtorespecteveryone,andtonotseecolor.Butthiswasiscriticized
becauseitisstillanassimilationistviewbecauseitdoesntcelebratestudentsdiversity
anddifferences,itjustglazesoverthedepthandsocialissuesthatgoalongwithhavinga
multiculturalclassroom.
Thethirdapproach,SingleGroupStudies,takesacertaingroupandstudiestheir
cultureandattempttoraisethestatusofthegroupasawhole(Poetter94).Anexample
thebookgavewasduringthecivilrightsmovement,whenAfricanAmericansandtheir
struggleforpoliticalandsocialrightsbecametopicsofcoursesorprogramsinschools.
Thecriticofthisapproachisthatinstudyingjustonegroupofpeople,youare
stratifiyingandleavingoutalltheothers.
ThefourthapproachgetsclosertowhatGrantandSleeterfeeliseffective
multiculturalpracticesandthatis,MulticulturalEducation.Thisapproachpromotes
equityandjusticeforallgroups,aswellaspromotesthevalueofculturaldifferences.But
themostseverecritisimofthisapproachisthatisstilldoesntgofarenoughbecauseit
doesntpayenoughattentiontosocialinequalitiesamongdifferentculturalgroups.
Thelastapproach,andwhatGrantandSleeterfeelistheidealisEducationthatis
MulticulturalandSocialReconstructionist.Thistakesalltheideasofeducationfromthe
fourthapproachbutthenalsoaddsacurriculumthatfocusesonsocialjustice.Inthe
classroom,thiswouldshowwithhavingindepthconversationsanddebatesabouthowto

changesocietalnormsandcreateequity.GrantandSleeterfeltthattherewerenodown
sidestothisapproach.
