Unit Summary
Through this unit we learned about play and how it is very important in art. We learned about
how art has a lot of humor in it. Sheri Klein talk about feminism and the humor seen in art in her
article Comic Liberation: the feminist face of humor in contemporary art. She talks about
different artist who portray humor in their art one example she uses is the walking stick made by
Aline Kominsky-Crumb and Alex Bag. In this piece they displayed the humor of Non-native
Americans through parody, satire and irony. Through this unit we displayed our sense of play
and humor. We made finger puppets that children could use to play and make stories. Many
people made animals, others made people and some used so really good imagination. We were
able to just play and could go to stations to make whatever we wanted. We also made funny
collages where we warped people and put pictures together to make a funny piece.
I really enjoyed this unit because I firmly believe in play. I feel like children learn more
through play and are able to have fun along with expressing themselves. Something I really
loved was when we could just do whatever we wanted. I felt like I was able to relieve some
stress and was able to just be happy with what I was doing. I feel like that is something I would
do for my students. I already do this at work by letting my student play and having fun with him.
I also like the collage idea and I think that if I work with older kids then it would be appropriate
for them but not for younger kids. Also I am just always having fun and find it hard to be serious
all the time.
