I Hate Country Music
I cant say there is anything in my life that I have a burning passion for. However, there is
one thing that I have developed a burning hatred for which, in its own way, is a passion. That
thing which I loathe so passionately is country music. The origin of this hatred is unclear to me.
All I know is that ever since I was a toddler, I have held a strong resentment of country music.
Everyone from Keith Urban to Scotty McCreery is on my list of unlistenable artists.
Growing up I would listen to all genres of music: pop, hip-hop, rock, and even classical.
However, country was out of the question. Whenever I heard a country song come on the radio I
immediately changed it. I disliked country music because of the repetitiveness. It seemed that all
country song lyrics made reference to a pickup truck or drinking by a river. Take for example
these lyrics from Blake Sheltons Boys Round Here: Yeah the boys 'round here, drinking that
ice cold beer, talkin' 'bout girls, talkin' 'bout trucks runnin' them red dirt roads out, kicking up
dust. This is the basic synopsis of the entire song as Blake Shelton continues to shout about
what his boys do for fun. I could not for the life of me differentiate between one country music
artist and another. The heavy accents within their singing sound horrendous and almost faked. In
addition, all country music relies on the same monotonous instruments playing the same
annoying melody. So if you pair the agonizing vocals with the irritating instruments, youre left
with a song that simply isnt enjoyable.

Unfortunately for me, I live in the south where country music is cherished. It is hard to
escape it. As luck would have it, my roommate is an avid country music fan. He loves playing
the genre on full volume from his laptop. Imagine my repulsion as I wake up every morning to
the appalling screeching of country music. Its hard for me to be enthusiastic about the day ahead
of me when I have to listen the constant blasting of Jason Aldean and Darius Rucker. Its the
perfect background music for someone on the verge of a mental breakdown. My roommate
swears that I will appreciate the genre by the time this semester ends but my hatred for anything
country is imbedded deep within me. I highly doubt that my opinion of the horrific genre will
ever change.
Maybe its because I dont drive a pickup truck or wear blue jeans and camouflage. Either
way, all country music sounds the same to me. Until the end of time, I will always have a special
passion for hating country music.
