Dear Mrs. Walz,

I am writing to you today regarding your daughter Gabrielles success in our Spanish II course.
While Gabrielle is bright girl who is often successful when she applies herself, she has lately
become unfocused during class. This is due largely to the use of her cell phone during
instructional time in class.
As is laid out in our class syllabus: Students are expected to respect the instructor and the time
of their fellow students by not texting or using cell phones during class. All phones are expected
to be on silent/vibrate and not to be out during class time. Students using a cell phone in class
will be given a verbal warning. The second time will result in detention.
In accordance with the syllabus that Gabrielle signed and her repeated use of her cell phone in
class after my repeated warnings I assigned her to detention today. I view our syllabus as an
agreement between my students and myself as their instructor and seek to honor my word when
it comes to the expectations in our classroom. I would appreciate any encouragement on your
part for Gabrielle to leave her cell phone in her backpack or purse during class time so that it will
not continue to be a distraction. I value her contributions to the class and I know that if she
applies herself as she has already exhibited in the past that she will be successful in my class
with her grades and with her acquisition of the Spanish language.
I am sure that without the distraction of her cell phone that our class can still be enjoyable and
further her education as she prepares for college.
Sincerely,

Seor Rush
