Culturally Responsive Teaching

Questions:
Out of the five key dispositions, which one is the most Important or which one should the
instructor rely on the most?
Why are there so many misconceptions of culturally responsive teaching?
How can you ensure that your teaching practices are culturally responsive and provide students
an opportunity to develop their cultural competencies?
Reactions:
I feel this is something that can easily be implemented into any curriculum but is often
overlooked.
It is important to inform instructors of these misconceptions so that they do not contribute to
these mistaken beliefs.
Students need to be provided the opportunity to learn about and through the use of their own
culture.
Restatements:
The end goal of CRT is to interrupt patterns of inequity and marginalization that exist both in
public schools and the broader society.
Academic achievement is an outcome of CRT, but it is not an end goal in itself. Within the CRT
framework, students work to achieve academically and attend college so that they may take
meaningful action in their own lives and communities to improve the lives of others and
diminish human oppression and suffering.
All students need literacy, numeracy, technological, social, and political skills.
Application:
I plan on implementing culturally responsive teaching in my own classroom as often as possible.
I can see how beneficial CRT could be for the students as well as the teacher. By allowing the
students the opportunity to bring their own culture into the classroom they may be more willing
to participate in the activities.
