The thing that strikes me most about my research thus far is that, on my paternal side, my
father was the first man to not serve in the military since the 1880s. Its incredible to think that
every recent war has had members of my family fighting in it. I know that my great grandfather
fought in WWI, my great uncles in WWII, and my grandfather in Korea. Fortunately, my father
missed out on Vietnam and I have no illusions on how long Id last in a real war. Its interesting
to explore the impact people you know had on the world.
My father and I were working through a box of stuff from his parents basement over the
weekend, and I found a series of ancient looking pictures of a cadet named John Addison
Weinshamphel, his mother, his comrades, and his father. Further reading shows that he was
actually a West Point cadet in 1913. Id never thought that Id have had a relative who attended
the most prestigious military school in the country.
The issues that remain mostly revolve around finding information on the Korean War as
my late grandfather isnt around to answer any questions, not that he particularly liked talking
about the war to begin with. Being able to interview him would have been a wonderful
opportunity, but there are a number of other resources to fill the gap.
