Writing Prompt 2
There were several events later in my life that helped to shape my literacy narrative. A
major event that advanced my literacy was my freshman year of high school when we read The
Odyssey by Homer. This book helped to greatly expand my knowledge of literature. The stories
contained in The Odyssey helped bring to life the meanings of modern day references to the story
itself, teach life lessons that were learned by the characters that are still applicable in todays
world, and show analogies that compare today to ancient Greece and what has and has not
changed for three thousand years.
This book was important to my literacy narrative because it was the first piece of classic
literature that I actually desired to complete. Before then, every time I was required to read a
piece of classic literature, I would groan at the thought of having to read such a boring piece.
When I started reading The Odyssey, the Greek Mythology in the epic became increasingly
interesting. It led me to start doing more research into Greek mythology. It became a fascination.
One of my favorite topics in literature is mythology, preferably Greek. The classic epic,
The Odyssey, by Homer was so full of mythology that it was the first piece of classic literature in
which my interest was piqued. This was a major jumpstart in my literacy narrative.
