Funding Cuts Among Education: Unfair Consequences

An editorial by Brisa Botello
Funding cuts started in 2007 and have had unfair consequences among students and their
education (Geiman, 2011, p.15). As Geiman(2011) stated The recession that begun in
December 2007 is the worst recession since the great depression of 1929(p.16). Since the U.S.
was struggling with money there were changes implied were most of there money is funded. The
government funds a large amount of money for education which had many changes implied to.
As Bell wrote (2012), Schools were told to prepare for large budget cuts to keep operating.
Changes were forcibly made without the thought of how this would impact the students and their
education. Changes and challenges were made towards students in their education such as
increased class sizes, reducing the programs in the schools, and technology equipment available
for students. While many teachers were being cut in order to save the U.S. money their were
challenges faced by students. Thompson (2013) explains how there was an unemployment rate
of 36% in the California district which affected students in their education and there were less
adults available for students(p.23). The increase in class size made it difficult for students to
cooperate with a large amount of students and only one teacher. When learning a new objective it
is important to have as much help available to students for the best results of a good
education. The fact that many teachers were cut resulted less programs available for students. As
Thompson (2013) acknowledged, There were nearly 20% of teachers subjects of art, music,
physical education, and technology in the California district cut(p.20-24). This left students
with limited amount of programs in the District. Although there are given examples of what
happened in this specific district many districts faced similar challenges in the U.S. For example
in Nevada, Ives Alama and Mosora (2013) researched that Schools in the district of Nevada had

reductions in travel money, research support, office supplies and other costs among schools(5370). Technology resources in schools were reduced and made it difficult for students to have
available resources. This was a conflict when having to make an assignment online without a
resource. Students faced challenges they should not have had faced when needing technology
resources.
Concerned parents, students and staff may stop the recession of these funding cuts in the
U.S. that have been affecting students. By the concern of these people they are able to get
together with school members and urge the government to stop these funding cuts. As President
Obama said, Your voice can change the world(2008). Students are the future and deserve the
best experience in education. By taking action in urging the government to stop these funding
cuts people are able to show their concern in students education and their future.
