The Lack of Advertisement Soccer Has in El Paso

The Lack of advertisement soccer has in El Paso

An editorial by Adrian Vicencio
During the years there has been many successful soccer teams that
have originated from El Paso. Teams like El Paso Patriots which was a team
that at one point was a professional soccer team. Advertising was one of the
reasons El Paso Patriots had their downfall. El Paso Patriots was soccer team
that represented the city like El Paso Chihuahuas baseball team do it now.
However the Patriots never had the same advertisement the Chihuahuas
have now.
81.2% of the population in El Paso is Latin/Hispanic (U.S. Census Bureau,
2015), plus we also have the Mexican border city, Juarez, which population is
majority Hispanic, Makes El Paso a great city to have soccer as the majority
sport. "Geographically were in the perfect location for this type of game,
(Hill, 2015) .Soccer is the majority sport in El Paso however they never
advertise local teams and local soccer events such that it doesnt even feel
like soccer is a majority sport. There has been times when professional
soccer teams have come to play in this city but the event is not advertised
as much and ends up not filling up the stadium. Most of those professional
soccer games have been in UTPEs football stadium the Sun Bowl, the
problem is that those events never get filled. The last soccer game that was
held in the Sun Bowl was between two Mexican professional teams, Cruz Azul
and Xolos de Tijuana. For that event many expected to be a sold out event
however they couldnt even fill up half of the stadium. Many citizens of El
Paso and Ciudad Juarez follow the Mexican professional soccer league it
should be easy to fill up a stadium where to big teams of the Mexican
professional soccer league are playing. The fact that they dont fill up means
that there is poor marketing, poor advertisement.
Soccer teams arent the only ones being affected by the lack of
advertising in soccer but also the sport and kids in the city. Without
advertising the sport, the people are not exposed to the sport and the
interest in soccer declines making it worse for soccer in the city. The lack of
advertising affects the kids and community by not getting the kids involved
in a sport, instead they turn to drugs for fun. Jaime Mejia, coordinator of the
Chivas El Paso Patriots, said Right now we are losing too many kids to drugs,
alcohol and violence (Hinojos, Natalie). If there is no one to advertise soccer
or any other sport it is more likely that kids wont get interested in any sport
and they will grow looking for other alternatives for fun, like drugs. El Paso
Patriots used to do soccer camps to get kids from the communities involve in
a sport and keep children out of drugs. They did it every year through the
whole city to try to reach the community. Not having an association that
promotes wealth and good for the community can affect the city by not
having someone to keep the children of bad influences.

The way we can improve the lack of advertisement in soccer is by

promoting local soccer teams. High school soccer teams in El Paso are really
competitive there has been schools from El Paso that have won the State
Championship, advertising those games can get the community more involve
in the sport and school. Advertising high school soccer games can get adults
to take their children to games and get them interested in soccer, rather
than having them in the streets doing drugs. The community could benefit
from high school games by getting kids out the streets and into the fields to
play. There should also be an association that advertises soccer by doing
camps, just like El Paso Patriots used to do it. Having soccer camps around
the city could boost the interest kids have in soccer more and keep them of
the streets.
When it comes to events such as professional teams coming to play at
El Paso. The City should advertise the event as much as possible by all social
media possible. It is ridiculous that a city where most people are Hispanic
and neighboring Mexican city is also Hispanic/Latin based cant fill up a
stadium where a professional soccer game between two Mexican
professional soccer teams takes place. If the city ever gets another semiprofessional team, like the Patriots, or a professional team, the city should
make advertisement of the team a high priority since they are not only
representing their team but also the city. Advertising those teams in El Paso
could increase the interest the city has about soccer and make it clear that
soccer is a majority sport in El Paso.
