Unit Paper 5
The last big idea of the semester, Structures and Systems with a standards based approach
really shows how even in having the structure of instructions an art teacher can still allow some
playfulness. Pinks chapter on Symphony highlights the importance of all the pieces working
together (Pink, 2006). Rather than analyze all the pieces it is seeing the patterns and relationships
between all of them even when no patterns are easy to spot - and synthesizing information
(Pink, 2006). The studio where all students were given the same instructions to follow highlights
what Pink is talking about. Even though all instructions were the same and all the materials
provided were the same, each group came up with something different. The instructions were
simple draw 3 circles however how each student artist interpreted the instructions is where
the differences in the art pieces arose.
The idea of systems and structures was an interesting big idea. Systems and structures are
something that we are all a part of everyday. By going to class I am a part of the education
system for example. The studios we as students were presented with however gave us the
freedom to see how even when we have to follow the rules of our system following and
meeting the standards as teachers, for example there is still room to play with it. I can see
implementing the studio I discussed above into a classroom, to highlight both teamwork between
student groups, and to emphasize that differences are okay. The way that one student may
interpret drawing a circle and how another student may view it is kind of amazing. I think it
would help a teacher grow as well as students to see how instructions were interpreted differently
by each group.
