With whom is the special educator expected to communicate and collaborate?

What tasks, roles, or responsibilities is the special educator expected to complete that require
communication and collaboration?
If you were to apply for this position, how would you talk about your strengths and
weaknesses in the areas that require collaboration and communication?
The job opening I reviewed is with the Leavenworth USD#567. The position is for a Speech
Language Pathologist. The educator reports directly to the principal and /or designee. They are
responsible for supervision of Para-Educator(s). The educator will communicate with other
teachers, school staff and parents.
Responsibilities that would require communication and collaboration would be:
1. Assist teachers and parents in developing an appropriate individual education
plan for students.

2. Participate in the screening, pre-assessment, identification, placement,

follow-up, and reviews of students.

3. Participate in the referral of students to other appropriate agencies as

appropriate.

4. Collaborates with school staff to implement therapy through inclusion and

consultation.

5. Assist teachers in the development and implementation of curriculum

modifications and appropriate classroom strategies.

and identified speech and language delays/disorders.
8. Participate in development of goals and strategies for educational
improvement.
9. Provide an assigned paraprofessional with appropriate direction, supervision,
and evaluation.

10.

Communicate effectively with all members for the school district and

community. Work effectively with community organizations and outside

agencies.
If I were to apply for this position, how would I discuss my strengths and
weaknesses in the areas that require collaboration and communication? That is a
tough question to address for me. I have a big weakness in that I have not held a
position that has put me directly in this position with education. However, I have
had direct roles involving working with students one on one in an assistant role. I
would say that I am eager to take more of a hands on approach to helping children.
I have always worked well with others in all positions that I have had and have
always been open to ideas and change. I can be a leader when needed but can also
follow the direction of others.
