Vertical Drilling System
2-3
The Smith Services Vertical Drilling System is designed to provide an efficient and cost-effective
means of maintaining a vertical wellbore trajectory.
The system utilizes proven packed hole assembly
BHA design techniques and combines it with the latest high performance positive displacement motor
technology for optimum performance. Synthetic diamond enhanced inserts are also selectively used at
the BHA contact points to provide effective wall support, resistance to abrasive wear and reduced friction. The reaming action of the synthetic diamond
enhanced inserts also helps ensure a smooth, full
gauge, high quality wellbore.
The Vertical Drilling System positive displacement
motor utilizes a power section with a uniform elastomer thickness on the stator that provides more
power and greater reliability than conventional
downhole motors.
A proprietary Smith Services BHA prediction modeling software program is utilized to analyze and optimize the BHA design and drilling parameters for
each specific application.
Features and Benefits
Optimized, cost effective system for vertical
drilling applications
Rotating near bit combined reamer/stabilizer to
provide additional BHA contact support adjacent to the bit to assist in deviation control and
its reaming action maintains a full gauge, high
quality wellbore
Added diamond enhanced stabilization on the
motor bearing section and transmission section
to ensure that a high quality vertical wellbore
trajectory is maintained
High power and longer life resulting in improved
drilling performance

Applications
Reduce downhole torque resulting from wellbore spiraling and doglegs
Medium to severe packed hole assembly designs typically require a Borrox AP Reamer to be placed directly
above the bit to provide reaming ahead of the stabilization. A reamer is not an effective stabilizer and
should always be followed, in this application, by full
gauge stabilization
Mild packed hole assemblies can be designed using
the Borrox AP Reamer as the first zone of stabilization. In extremely abrasive drilling conditions, an additional reamer should be considered

Applications
The DEI Reamer contains no moving
or sealed components and is not affected by hot hole conditions. It can
be placed at any point in the BHA.
The reamer removes ledges and
opens any under gauge portions of
the build section in directional applications.
Key seats can be effectively removed
using DEI Reamer(s).

The Gauge Indicator Sub generates an increase in torque when the drill bit wears
below nominal gauge specification. This
cost-effective technique allows the driller to
detect drill bit gauge wear by the increasing torque as the wear-resistant blades
make contact with the hole wall. The Gauge
Indicator Sub can help reduce reaming time
and maximize ROP. A short, efficient body
design enables the sub to be made up between the drill bit and mud motor or rotary
steerable system. The Gauge Indicator Sub
is available in a broad range of sizes.

Applications
Directional projects where maintaining hole gauge is
expected to be a problem. The DOG Sub will maintain
hole size once the drill bit begins to lose its gauge,
thus reducing or eliminating the need to ream back
to bottom with a directional assembly.
Directional wells where doglegs necessitate a reaming run through the build section. The DOG Sub may
provide the adequate reaming and contact behind the
bit, wiping out the ledges as drilling progresses. A
smoother build section can reduce hole drag and facilitate drilling operations.
Near-bit reaming in a packed hole assembly when
placed directly above the drill bit. Shortening the distance from the bit to the first point of stabilization
improves BHA and drilling performance.

This tool is designed around a rugged, one-piece mandrel constructed of high-strength alloy steel with ample tong space
for handling ease and extra length for recutting connections. The rig-replaceable, integral blade sleeves are available in
three types (listed below).
The Ezy-Change Type II is a popular choice for remote areas or where storage problems exist. One mandrel series can
be used for several different hole sizes, reducing the need for a large mandrel inventory on location. The sleeves are
easily changed on the rig floor either when changing hole size or when the sleeves have worn under gauge. This versatility also allows a convenient way to change the type of stabilizer wear surface to match drilling conditions. A simple
plate-type sleeve breaker (available on request) enables easy make-up and breakout.
Features and Benefits
The 17 inch and smaller sleeves feature three spiral blades; four straight blades
for larger sizes
Maximum annular flow area
Multiple hardfacing options
Robust one-piece mandrel design
Ample length for multiple recuts
Applications
Remote or space-constrained locations
Mild to medium packed hole assemblies
Pendulum assemblies
Directional drilling assemblies
Control harmonics and drill collar whipstock
When the blades wear down to an unacceptable diameter, the tool should be removed from the drilling assembly and returned to a Smith Services repair center where
it can usually be redressed to full gauge.

Applications
A packed hole assembly typically requires the placement of multiple IBS stabilizers throughout the three
zones of stabilization. Contact a Smith Services representative for BHA recommendations.
A pendulum assembly is a recommended application
for the IBS due to its unitized design. For the most effective pendulum assembly, two stabilizers should be
run separated by one drill collar.
Vibration and drill collar whipstock can be reduced
through the placement of stabilizers in the BHA and
upper drill collar string.
