Research Proposal
I recall reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn for the first time during the summer
of my sophomore year. I held me to question the motives of Mark Twains writing. Twain wrote
in a manner that was so crude and it did not make sense to me because I was told that the book
was against slavery. I would like to do research on the writing of Mark Twain, more specifically
his novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, because I am a history buff and would like to
research how this work affected the South or why Twain wrote this novel. Authors fear the
response of their work however Twain composes with such confidence in exposing the false
sense in American morals through his novel.
Slavery existed in this country based on freedom. Although the founding fathers sought to
fight in a revolution so that all men and women could have life, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness they did not offer this to a certain group of before based on their skin tone and
preconceived notions that owning another human being was deemed a tradition. As an African
American male I find slavery very intriguing. I do not agree with it what so ever, however the
institution in itself is worth studying. My paper will be a mixture of both, information about
American society during the colonial period up to after the civil war as well as persuasive
concerning the writings of Mark Twain and the controversy he caused through his use of satire.
The essay must be informative because it is describing an era in our culture as well as persuasive

because I am arguing to prove a point that Twains work sparked political as well as societal
controversy though the use of satire and humor.
The goal of this paper is to inform others about a book that tends to cause much debate in
our country as well as an important author. Mark Twain is historically renowned and young
students should be aware of his writing style. This essay is written for those that are literary
proficient as well as the historian buffs.
To prepare myself for this essay I have read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn twice, I
have read many of his other essays with his humorous writing style to comprehend the art of
satire. I have read his biography and have studied the analysis of Huck Finn.
