You will also need: A computer with access to the internet. A basic knowledge

Specific Course Outcomes for W131:
Students who complete W131 should be able to demonstrate their competence
in four areas:
Rhetorical Knowledge, including the ability to focus on a purpose and
audience; to respond appropriately to different kinds of rhetorical
situations; to adopt appropriate voice, tone, and level of formality; and to
write in several genres.
Critical Thinking, Reading, and Writing, including the ability to use
writing and reading for inquiry, learning, thinking, and communicating;

to manage a writing assignment as a series of tasks, including finding,
evaluating, analyzing, and synthesizing appropriate primary and
secondary sources; and to integrate ones own ideas with those of others.
Writing Processes, including the use of multiple drafts to create and
complete a successful text; the development of flexible strategies for
generating, revising, editing, and proof-reading; and participation in
collaborative and social processes that require the ability to critique ones
own and others works.
Knowledge of Conventions, including the ability to follow common
formats for different kinds of genres; to practice appropriate means of
documenting ones work; to control such surface features as syntax,
grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Assignment Sequence and Breakdown:
The Argument Proposal (Project 1): In this piece, you will want to pick
a topic that you connect to and can elaborate on since it will be a topic
you will continue to use for your portfolio. You may want to look over the
assignment sheets to help you better understand each assignment and
allow you to make an informed decision over your topic. (3 page single
spaced minimum)
Rhetorical Analysis (Project 2): For your Rhetorical Analysis you will be
making an analytical video with an explanatory statement.
Argument Paper (Project 3): You will be arguing the topic you proposed
in Project 1. (7 page minimum)
Reflection (Project 4): For your flection, you will be writing about the
process of your writing and how you think you progressed in this course.

Portfolio:
You are required to submit a portfolio for this course during your exit
conference that cannot be rescheduled. Late or incomplete portfolios are not
accepted. Your portfolio will include Project 2, Project 3, and Project 4.
Journals:
You will be responsible for writing several journal entries throughout the
semester. In each of the entries you will write 1) responses to the assigned
readings, 2) reflections of your progress as a writer and researcher. All entries
must be a minimum of 300 words and submitted to MyCompLab where each
entry will be reviewed, evaluated and returned to you. No late journals will be

accepted and will adhere to the following criteria for grading: 1) thoughtful
reflection/discussion of the assigned topic and 2) meeting the time, length, and
formatting requirements.
Grading:
Each of the four projects listed above will have a rough draft due that will be
counted as 30% of your final grade of the project with the final draft
representing 70%.
