Life of Michelangelo
Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was born in Caprese near Arezzo, Republic
of Florence (present day Tuscany, Italy) on March 6th 1475. In his life, he lived in Caprese,
Arezzo, and Rome. Michelangelo's father realized early on that his son had no interest in the
family financial business, so agreed to apprentice him, at the age of 13, to the fashionable
Florentine painter's workshop. There, Michelangelo was exposed to the technique of fresco. He
also obtained special permission from the Catholic Church to study cadavers for insight into
anatomy. Two relief sculptures that survive, "Battle of the Centaurs" and "Madonna Seated on a
Step," are testaments to his unique talent at the tender age of 16. Michelangelo was married once
to Vittoria Colonna, but many believe he was homosexual. He studied under the respected
sculptor Bertoldo di Giovanni and was exposed to prominent poets, scholars, and learned
Humanists. Michelangelo died on February 18th 1564 at the age of 88 in Rome.
Michelangelo became interested in art at a young age after watching the painters at
nearby churches. To get started, Michelangelo's father realized early on that his son had no
interest in the family financial business, so agreed to apprentice him, at the age of 13, to the
fashionable Florentine painter's workshop. He eventually had a formal education in art. The art
movement he was involved in was Italian high renaissance. He used several materials in his
career including, chalk, oils, plaster, and marble, but also was an architect and an author. Most of
his art was about people. He was a highly successful and accepted artist.

Michelangelo was mostly famous for his talented religious sculptures and paintings for
the church. His style was Italian high renaissance. There are several versions of an intriguing
story about Michelangelo's "Cupid" sculpture, which was artificially "aged" to resemble a rare
antique: One version claims that Michelangelo aged the statue to achieve a certain patina, and
another version claims that his art dealer buried the sculpture (an "aging" method) before
attempting to pass it off as an antique.
