Copyright/fAIR USE 2
According to the U.S, Copyright office, copyright is a form of protection by the laws of
the United States for original works of authorship, including literary, dramatic, musical,
architectural, cartographic, choreographic, pictorial, graphic, sculptural and audiovisual
creations. Copyright is very well self-explanatory. It is the right to copy, but as a way to protect
any idea, process or procedure. One key purpose of the Copyright Law is to promote the progress
of the science and useful arts. Fair Use is a limitation and exception to the exclusive right granted
by copyright law to the author of a creative work, according to the online encyclopedia. Fair use
in the United States allows limited use of copyright material without permission.
Both Copyright and Fair Use go hand in hand but they differ in several ways. Copyright
is a law that applies universally in the United States. Fair use which is also a law, but it is used as
a defense to copyright infringement claims. Copyright tells you what you cannot do while Fair
Use gives the exceptions. It tells you what you might be able to do, depending on the situation at
hand. Educators should know when it is legal to record or tape for educational purposes. It is
very important to always read the copyright notice before reusing content. If you do not not read
over the copyright notice it goes to show that you do not agree with all terms and conditions
associated with the material.
It is very important for students to be familiar with the copyright policy being that they
are writing papers in most cases or doing projects. It should be top priority for educators to
introduce this topic. Each student should be required to read over the Copyright/Fair Use
guidelines and get familiar with each rule associated with it. Stated in the textbook, The National
Education Technology Standards for students also known as NETS, are a set of standards
published by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) for the purpose of
leveraging the use of technology in K-12 education to enable students to learn effectively and
