Research Proposal

The music genre that we now know today as Hip-Hop, has undergone a substantial change ever
since it's foundation. I feel that this change is indeed a change for the worse. In the early 70s, a Disc
Jockey (or DJ) known as Kool Herc, began hosting parties, and began the genre that we know of today.
Ever since a fellow artist that collaborated with DJ Kool Herc by the moniker of Coke La Rock voiced
the first ever rap lyrics, he and Kool Herc began an entire new genre. In the early years, it was once an
art form that brought the black community together with art, dance, creativity, and peace. Over time,
more people came from the wood works and helped define the brand new genre. In the late 70s- early
80s the music genre became finally hit popularity. It was only after two decades of its conception that
the bigwigs of the entertainment industry distilled and corrupted the genre into something that would
line their pockets, while corrupting the youth and swaying them away from the true message of the
genre. Hip-Hop today is defined today as sexual objectification, arrogance, hate, and bragging about
their money. The entertainment industry then channels this message to the youth, and molds them into
potential customers. The question that is asked here is if Hip-Hop as a whole had more of a negative or
a positive influence on society.
