UDC 221.882.211 DEUTSCHE NORM September 1987 M1,6 to M52 hexagon head screws DIN threaded up to the head Product grades A and B 933 ‘Sechskantschrauben mit Gewinde bis Kopf: Gewinde M 1.5, This standard, together with bis M52; Produktklassen A und 6 DIN ISO 4017, Septembor 1987 edition, ‘supersedes the December 1969 edition This standard should be used together with ISO 4017. For details, see Explanatory notes. It is Intended to withdraw the present standard by 1 July 1992 at the latest |n keeping with current practice in standards published by the Intemational Orgenizatfon for Standardization (ISO), acomma hhas been used throughout as the decimal marker. Dimensions in mm 1 Field of application This standard specifies requirements for M 1,6to M2 hexagon head screws threaded upto the head, assigned to product grade A. for sizes up to M24 and lengths not exceeding 10 or 150mm, and to product grade B for sizes greater than M24 or lengths exceeding 10d or 180mm, The screws are designed similar to those specified in DIN 931 Part 1, but are threaded up to the head and have com- ‘mercial lengths up to and including 200 mm. 4, in special cases, screws are to comply with specifications other than those given in this standard, e.g. regarding property class, these shall be selected in accordance with the appropriate standards, 2 Dimensions DIN 78-K thraad end; 1540 39. {or thresd sizes not greater than M4, = also pormitted without chamtered end. maximum of 2P incomplete thread oe x Pama aterave sap ot aie Sq) ans +L NULL | sls a Bren diameter 4 Reference line for de = minimum wrenching height (0.7 & min) Continued on pages 2 to 9 Paga2 OIN993 23) mx | 105 | 12 | 195 | 1s [ie | 21 | 24 a ‘ max. | 0.25 | 0,25 | 025 | 04 4 oa 05 | + Fe a a we | ae ae | a aaa A “ize | 158 | 188 | 226 [268 | 395 bro vee [ee | at [ase [ase | aes e ee a 18 | 228 Spee ee peer Prost gage Nominal - 8 ‘Mass (7,85 ka/dm*) for 1000 units, in kg, approximately 2 18 = = On - 7 476 = - 013 | 023 | 043 | 063 | o84 1,26 | 273 SSPES] ate | cas | ove | oar | co | ts ar | a4 771 = = O16 | 029 | 052 | 0.66 102 149 | 2.38 374 971 | - = 018 | 033 | 088 | O75 14 164 | 2,63 408 us ar | cae | tek ce | ae | io | ar |e 13.65 = = 039 | 07 092 1.38 1,95 312, 4,16 15.65, = = oa2 | o7e | 1 1S 2 337 Bit Tass = oes | va] 9s gat | aor 8 21,58 = = | os4 1.27 185 | 256 442 615 Bass T= toa | ta | aos | as | tao | ass 2788 = ae Pai weep 7 Be =e Se oe rm BE aoe | 54,4 535 | B21 ose a 2s eas 225 | oes Si as [ns] sae [0h wo [ fas mis tar DINGS3 Page 3 Table. Explanatory notes For more than 20 years efforte have been directed towards the achievement of the international interchangesbility of fasteners by preparing intemational standards for the product concemed. ISO Standards have now been pub- lished far the most Important types of fasteners (sae ISO Standards Handbook 18) However, international efforts only servea useful purpose it natlonal standards are adapted as far as possible to inter national standards, or, ideally, replaced by them. Current DIN Standerds elready agree in substance with the relevant 'SO Standards, but still differ in some respects, as for Instance in the widths across flats for hexagon products. The Federal Republic of Germany adopted International Standard ISO 272 on widths across fits as national stand- {ard DIN ISO 272 in October 1878. Nevertheless, widths across flats deviating from DIN ISO 272 are sill being used in Germany for nominal sizes M 10, M12, M14 and M22. The table below compares the previous widths across fats with the new ones specified for the four nominal sizes referred to. Thread size mio | Miz | m4 Previous width across fats, in mm. New width across fate as in ISO 272, te] te | a | oe w|i | a2 | a2 The manufacturers and users of hexagon praducts partie! pating in the work of the Normenausschul Mechanischa Verbindungselemente (Fasteners Standards Committee), together with representatives of the dealers in fasteners, have decided to introduce the new widths across flats in al relevant product standards. Since experience has shown, that the introduction of the new widths across flats has not been advanced by their inclusion in DIN Standards merely a8 preferred alternatives to the previous widths across flats, the following decisions have been reached to accolerate the changeover procedure. Supplementary to currant DIN Standards specifying the provious widths across flats, DIN ISO Standards dealing with the same products will, wherever ISO Standards are International Patent Classification F168 36/00 DIN 033 Page @ available, be published which, besides introducing a num- beer of ther minor amendments will specify the new widths across ats conforming to ISO 272.Inboth DIN and DIN [SO Standards attention will be drawn to the fact that the relevant ISO Standards are to be preferred and that the DIN Standard isto be replaced after a transition period of 5 yoars, Iino relevant ISO Standard is avaliable, the DIN Standard will contain a foreword stating that the previous width across flats specifications are to be withdrawn after a tran~ sition pesiod of § years and replaced by those specified in Iso 272, This sets a time limit for both manufacturer and user of hexagon products by which the changeover to the new ‘widths aotoss flats must be effected, The respansible com- rmittoo is of the opinion that it wll till be possible after this period to obtain fasteners complying with the superseded ‘specifications as spare parts, In some cases, the replacement ofthe previous OIN Stand ards by the relevant ISO Standards will have further con- sequences, besides the changeover to the new widths across flats, attontion being drawn to this ciceumstance in the national foreword of tha relavant DIN ISO Standards. These consequences result from the fact that the ISO Standards have not yet reached the same level of com= pleteness as the DIN Standards. Thus a number of nominal product specifications forfine piten threads are not found inthe ISO product standards. Further- mora, SO Standards on technical delivery conditions are stil inthe intial stages, so that specific requirements are still subject to separate agreement when ordering prod Ucts in accordance with ISO Standards, as they are not i- cluded in the designation for order purposes. Besides these consequences, which are of importance when applying the new ISO Standards, the amendment of the widths across flats also have a number of conse- ‘quences as regards the use of the new products which the {designer must take into consideration. Besides the amend- ced assembly sizes, this epplies above all to the different surface pressure for the bearing area of the nut or the heads of the bolts. These cificulties are discussed in Recommendation VOA 262+) published by the Verband der Automobilindustri o.¥. (German Automobile Manufacturers Association) *) Obtainable trom: Dokumentation Kraltlahrwesen e.V., Grénerstrabe 5, 0-7140 Ludwigsburg,
