ME273 Fall 2015 Homework 7

Due December 4, 2015 at 11:59pm

1. Solve Problem 7.4 in the textbook using Ansys. Use mesh controls and/or adaptive refinement
to ensure that the results of your analysis are converged. Please include the following:
a. the analysis log file,
b. fringe plot of total deformation, and
c. fringe plot of von Mises stress.
(10 points)
2. Use Ansys to solve the thick-walled cylinder problem as shown below. Model this problem in
three different ways: 3D, 2D plane strain and 2D axisymmetry problems. Make sure you
achieve convergence in each of these cases. For each case, please submit the following items:
a. the analysis log file, and
b. radial stress r fringe plot.
Also create a table that compares the maximum von Mises stresses for the three cases.
(15 points)

3. Plate with an elliptic hole revisited

Perform a parameter study with half of the minor axis b of the elliptic hole as the parameter.
Run the sensitivity study with 9 steps for the range of b = 0.1 to 1.0. Submit a parameter chart
of xx vs b. Comment on how changing b would affect the stress concentration factor. Note
that at b = 0.5 (major axis = minor axis a circle), xx should be the same as the result from
the previous assignment. Use steel as the material for the plate.
