Tutoring /Mentoring a Second Grade Student

2014-2015 School Year
I was a tutor for a second grade student throughout my entire senior year.
Once a week for about a half hour I would help the student one on one with any
homework he had or the teacher would ask me to help him with specific skills.
Attached is an email from the teacher I worked with explaining what I did with the
student.
Alignment:
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment:
1. Standard 10 Collaboration: The Teacher fosters relationships with school
colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support
students learning and well being.
2. I chose this experience because I felt it aligned well with standard 10. I
believe tutoring the student throughout the school year gave me great experience
in not only working with students, but also working in a larger community with
multiple teachers and staff members. While working with these staff members,
building relationships with school colleagues and parents was inevitable.
3. After tutoring for an entire year I feel I am much more competent. Being in a
school system and working with and around the students in the classroom really
helped me learn about teaching. I learned valuable skills while student teaching;
first, how to control a student when he/she acts out and does not want to
participate. Also the skill of just getting to know a specific student so you can teach
and present information in a way that will benefit them the most. Lastly, I learned
how to work in a school environment and how to communicate with other staff
members on ideas, problems, and daily tasks.
UW Platteville KSD Alignment:
1. KSD 4D; Participating in a Professional Community.
2. I believe that this experience has a direct relation to participating in a
professional community. When I walked into the elementary school I was no
longer a student but a educator. I worked with the secretary, teachers, and
principal in a professional way to try and help the student succeed.
3. After working in the professional environment for an entire year I believe that
I will be much more comfortable in my workplace. I will be much more used
to the way tasks and problems are handled in a professional way. I think all of
this experience will benefit me greatly when I am out in the work field.
2C. Managing Classroom Procedures
4C. Communicating with families
4F. Showing Professionalism
