GREYSON POWELL

NANOTECHNOLOGY IN RESPIRATORY MEDICINE.

This research paper addresses the fact that nanotechnology is like a two edged sword.

There are many pros that will aid in medical advances. There are also many problems
that may arise.
Pros
Drug based delivery systems
Gene therapy
Diagnostic aid

Cons
Oxidative stress
Geonotoxicity
Immune Effects

CORRELATION TO OUR CLASS

The article explores Nano

particles as discussed in
class including Fullerene
C60 and Carbon
nanotubes. There are
structures shown of these
materials. We have
discussed similar
structures in class.

CORRELATION TO CLASS

second generation nanocarriers are already used clinically against lung

cancer with substances like Aurimmune Cyt-6091 and Bind-014. Aurimmune

Cyt-6091 is a drug delivery system based on gold nanoparticles functionalized
with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-).
(Omlor pg3)
They dicuss the use and some properties of gold nano particles which we

have discussed a little in class.

Another interesting thing discussed involves nanoparticle that try to pass the

epithellal barrier of the lung. These nano particles cannot be positively

charged, cations. These particles must also be smaller than 34 nm.

DISCOVERED THIS FAR

Conclusions of this research include a great advance in the past years in drug

delivery, gene therapy, and hyperthermia.

Problems that have arrised include dangers of inhalation, there is also an

uncertainty of the toxicity.

By far nano technology in repiratory medicine will aid humans as we begin to

understand and develop it further.
