Film Assignment 3 - Rabbit Proof Fence
For this third assignment, I chose to watch Rabbit Proof Fence over The Mission. Both
films are related to colonialism. It seems to be easier to understand Rabbit Proof Fence than The
Mission. This film is took place in Australia and talked about how White people were treated the
indigenous people. They tried to show them how to live their life and rank the people by skin
colors.
The white people came to Australia and started colonized the country. Many native
people started concern what might happen to them. The colonizers went to the small town in
Western Australia kidnapped majority of the young native indigenous people and brought them
to the camp. They taught them the civilization ways and rank them by colors. Many native
people were refused and frighten.
This film was giving an idea similar when the Great Britain came to America back in the
day. They came in to colonize the new world and called Native Americans as Indians. The British
werent nice to the Native people. They wiped out the whole populations with diseases and killed
many Natives, and force them to leave their own hometown to the west.
Watching this film, I can relate to what we studied in class about culture and colonization.
How one culture thought they were the superior and tried to conquer other nations culture? It
was the same as the film how the British ranked the Native Australians through their colors,
kidnapped them and try to force them to do their civilize ways. This was pretty sad and
emotional to me because it made other people lost their identities, they couldnt live the way they
want to live and they lost their ancestor lands.
