In the article Making College Relevant by Kate Zernike, who
graduated from the University of Toronto and has been a New York Times
correspondent since 2000, she explains how and why colleges are choosing
to get rid of certain majors and why they are adding others. She argues that
many people are no longer worried and humanities, philosophy, or the liberal
arts. Zernike explains that many students are majoring in areas where jobs
are abundant and pay the most. However, Zernike brings up the fact that
the humanities tend to educate people much farther out and that what you
learn in liberal arts affects you positively and stays with you throughout your
life. Zernike also suggests that jobs and employers are looking for more
people who can effectively write, speak, think critically, be innovative, and
be creative, and that these traits are taught and learned through the liberal
arts.
