Dear search committee:
Thank you for looking at my application materials for the English and Study Skills Instructor position
listed on North Dakota State University's human resources website. I am delighted to have the
opportunity to present my qualifications.
The defining element of my six years of teaching college English has been a passion for helping
students succeed, especially in one-on-one situations. In that time, I have coached many students
with dis/abilities or external struggles in concrete, portable reading and writing strategies. Doing so
has made me keenly attentive to students individual differences. In 2013, I pioneered a study that
examined the ways autistic college students participate in and value peer review. The research
helped other composition instructors and me question and revise collaborative classroom activities
so that they were more helpful for people who experience socialization on such a different
perceptual level. My research inspired me to reach out to all students, including those whose life
issues intrude upon their chances at academic success, allowing my classroom pedagogy to evolve
recursively to create an approach that serves the kinds of learners TRIOs programs assist.
My experience as a nontraditional student helps me connect with some of the struggles dis/abled
and low-income students endure. In addition to having put myself through college by working full
time, my mental differences caused me to struggle in areas others grasped more easily. Taken as a
whole, my experience has given rise to a strong focus on helping at-risk students gain and keep
access to the university system, a mindset essential for an English and Study Skills Instructor.
Thank you for the opportunity to apply for this meaningful position, and thank you for your
consideration. Please feel free to reach me at 701-850-3840 or Cody.Kaser@ndsu.edu.
Kind regards,

Cody M. Kaser
