Todays lesson was focused on acknowledging the different letter

names of the letters in the alphabet. Each letter has a name, so by

using the poem that I written on the chart paper, my goal was to try
and get the students to recognize the letters of the alphabet and just
the letters in general that were surrounding the poem. Some students
went as far as pointing out some letters in different words. I love
seeing how much my students have grown with my lessons. They are
becoming great learners.
In order to keep a smooth transition from the large group to the
partner activity, I dismissed students by having them use their writing
workshop partners, which Mrs. E assigned a few weeks ago. I would
call one person and then the partner pair would come up to me and
collect their materials; the cup full of uppercase letters and the
alphabet strip. During the activity it was fun to walk around and
observe the different partners taking turns picking a letter out, saying
the letter name and then finding its match on the alphabet strip. Some
students I noticed had to say the alphabet song in order to find the
match, other students found the match right away and those students
were the ones who finished early and took a pile of high frequency
words to practicing spelling with the letters from their cup. I think this
activity benefited every student because the students who struggle
with their letters were able to practice saying the letter names and
matching them up to where it is located in the alphabet, whereas

students who zoomed through this activity where able to achieve a

higher-order thinking by practicing spelling their high frequency words
and even some first grade high frequency words.
