Multi-modal Project

To accompany my essay on individuality, I chose to create a collage.

The collage has a number of black and white photographs of people, with a
colored picture of Chris McCandless in the center. The black and white
photographs represent the a more conformist approach to society, while the
color represents breaking away from that in favor of individuality. The
photograph of Chris was placed in the center so it would stand out from the
others, making it the center of attention. I chose to make Chris the focus
because we chose our topics for our essays based on the things that we read
and saw in Into the Wild. Not only that, but he is very iconic when it comes to
the subject of Individuality. On the other hand, I chose to use all very well
known, famous actors in the background for two main reasons. For one, I was
going for a pathological appeal, since many people recognize these faces.
The instant recognizability of these people helps draw attention for the
audience. The other reason is because in a lot of ways, they represent the
society that Chris chose to break away from. Im not insinuating that all of
these people are inherently conformists or anything, but it cannot be denied

that the media plays a very large role on our society, and these people are
some of the most iconic faces.
