Salt Water vs. Pure Water Experiment

Directions: With your group, conduct an experiment. Read the research question and come up with a hypothesis.
Follow the procedure carefully and record your results. Then use your hypothesis and results to come up with a
conclusion.

Research Question:
What do you think would happen if you poured salty water and pure water into the same container?

Hypothesis:
If_____, then_____.

Procedure:
1. Make sure the divider that is dividing the middle of the water tank is completely inserted.
2. Pour 250 mL of water from the large beaker into each of the smaller beakers.
3. Stir red food coloring into one small beaker of water and blue food coloring into the other small beaker of
water
4. Pour 10 grams of salt into the beaker with the red water.
5. Have one student pour 200 mL from the blue beaker into one side of the tank and one student pour 200 mL
from the red beaker into the other side of the tank.
6. Remove the divider from the tank and observe what happens.
Record your observations below.

Results:
What happened when you removed the divider from the tank?

Conclusion:

Was your hypothesis correct? What were your results? Why did that happen?
