How Do I Revise?

Use your teachers

o If there is anything you do not understand ASK
Learn by heart
o Definitions : the mole, Avogadro constant, enthalpy changes (including lattice
energy), saturated and unsaturated compounds, le Chateliers principle, atom
economy, fuels
o Reactions of alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, halogenoalkanes, group I and 7 elements
and their compounds
o Solubility rules
o Practical techniques : distillation, reflux, cracking/dehydration, fractional
crystallisation, salt preparation, simple and combustion calorimeters
o Organic reaction mechanisms : free radical substitution, electrophilic addition,
nucleophilic substitution
Do past papers
o Review all the past papers you have done so far
o You will be given all the available past papers complete any we do not do in class
at home, as far as possible without help from the textbook/notes
o For any parts you struggled with, change pen colour and complete the rest with help
from the textbook/notes/other students
o Then study the markscheme (really get to know how marks are allocated for each
question type) and mark your work. Grade boundaries vary from year to year but
you will have access to them so you can check where you are
o Then study the examiners report to see what the common mistakes were.
o Repeat this whole process for each of the papers
Practice exam technique
o Use CUH circle command words, underline what you are being asked to do,
highlight any key bits of information
o Know what command words such as Define, Explain, Describe or State mean
for you to do
Form a revision group with other like-minded students
o Research shows that if you can teach a subject then you are much more likely to
understand it and remember it yourself
o Make sure you set yourselves achievement targets, though, as group work can very
quickly turn into an unproductive gossip session

Use your revision guide

o Read through the notes and worked examples, looking at the advice from
ResultsPlus and the examiner tips
o Do the quick questions and check your answers with those at the back of the book
o Tick off the checkpoints from the specification
o Do the practice exam questions and check your answers. If you are unsure as to why
you got something wrong ASK
o Do the practice unit tests and check your answers
Use websites
o www.s-cool.co.uk
o www.chemguide.co.uk
o www.docbrown.info
