Chair Meenakshi Srinivasan

New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission
Municipal Building
1 Centre Street, 9th Floor, North
New York, NY 10007
December 8, 2015
Dear Chair Srinivasan,
As the Member of Congress representing the 10th Congressioanl District, which includes the
Upper West Side of Manhattan, I am writing to offer my support for the Certificate of
Appropriateness application for 378 West End Avenue. West End Collegiate Church has played
an important role in the Upper West Sides history and is an asset to the neighborhood. The
Church has shown a dedication to keeping being historically sensitive as they move forward with
their project, taking into account community input and the unique and distinct nature of the
surrounding streetscape.
The new building proposed by West End Collegiate Church, designed by COOKFOX, fits well
into the historic context of West End Avenue. The design takes material cues from the landmark
church and the landscape of the buildings on West End Avenue. The necessary restoration work
on 378 West End Avenue pays homage to one of the avenues defining buildings by bringing it
back to prime condition.
My district is home to many of the New Yorks most recognizable landmarks, sites and
buildings. In order to ensure they remain important culturally, educationally and historically
relevant, they must be preserved properly. The proposed restoration and reconstruction has
received widespread community support, and enhances the character of the landmark district we
have fought diligently to preserve.
I respectfully request that the Commission support this application as an appropriate addition to
the historic district.
Sincerely,

JERROLD NADLER
Member of Congress
