Philosophy of Literacy

I believe in balanced literacy. The teaching of literacy needs to include a balance

of reading, writing and lastly, strategies to improve both. It needs to be a social
endeavor that provides a variety of instructional strategies to accommodate all students
needs. Balanced literacy will create a genuine appreciation for good literature and will
improve many different skills such as phonics, and many others. Balanced literacy in the
classroom is a way to see where your students are in the classroom and how they can
improve.
I believe that all writing efforts should be encouraged. Writing can be simply a
letter or could be story that breaks your heart and it could be anything in between.
Writing is an opportunity to express oneself in any point of time. I believe that writing is
imperative to a child's development as a student. Children need to be allotted time to
write. Writing allows the children to express themselves. Writing is nothing without
reading and vise versa. Free time to write should be encouraged to promote daily
writing.
My belief is that children need to be exposed to reading and writing at a
extremely young age. Children should visually see writing often and should be allowed
time to write and read. Exposure to literature at a young age is imperative to the
development of the child.

I believe in using authentic text in the classroom.Authentic text guides learning in

the direction they need in a particular text. It also engages and conversation and makes
the students think about things different. By using authentic text in the classroom, the
children are getting exposed to different languages and vocabulary. Many of these text
can include, interest and hobbies that will help engage the students. I believe that using
authentic literature will provide exposure to real life situations.
My belief is that assessment drives instruction. Assessment and instruction are
inseparable. I believe assessment drives tomorrow's instruction. Without assessment
there will be no instruction to get to assessment. Assessments map out what the days
after will look like. Assessment in my eyes is all about growth and development.
Assessment can be differentiated to fit each students needs. Assessment is a reflection
of the students and teachers success. I want to Encourage a variety of formal and
informal assessment that will drive instructional planning. This will help with the students
progress and lesson plan writing.
