E-portfolio Assignment 6: Listening Lesson Plan with Media
Context: This lesson is for an EFL class of 7th and 8th graders in Paraguay. This
particular class focuses on listening as many students are considering or
preparing for the exchange student opportunity provided by a particular Illinois
grade school. They have had mostly national English teachers and need
practice listening to and understanding controlled native English speech.
Objectives: Students will be able to
1) demonstrate ability to comprehend the gist of a conversation
2) demonstrate ability to use context with new vocabulary
3) identify important non-verbals in a conversation
Materials:

Video clip from Frozen, the trading post scene (minute 37 to minute
38 and 10 seconds)
Audio-visual equipment with sound capabilities
Worksheet of modified cloze activity for the scene
Graphic organizer for comparison

Input:

Watch video clip once without sound. Discuss the non-verbal


communication seen in this clip. What seems to be going on?
What are the conditions? What are the problems the characters are
having?
Watch the video clip again, this time with sound. Ask
comprehension questions. What does she need to buy? What is
he buying? What information does she want to know? How much
money does he have? What is his job? What is the shop owner willing
to throw in?

Language: (forms and vocabulary)

Give the students a modified cloze with a word bank of the scene
conversation. Have the students fill in the cloze with pencil by
making predictions of what should go in the blanks in a small
group.
Play the clip one more time. Have the students check their answers
and make corrections as they listen carefully to the clip. Place marks
in the dialogue where important non-verbals take place.

Have the students ask Yes/No questions in their small groups to


check their answers.

Fill in a graphic organizer comparing and contrasting winter in


Paraguay and winter in colder countries.

the USA during winter.
