Reading Mini Lesson
Common Core State Standard: Reading informational text
standards for 4th grade.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.2
Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by
key details; summarize the text.
Objective Students will discuss the main idea of a text by using key
details to support their summaries.
Materials Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney
Procedure
Introduction/Purpose - Readers could we please come to the
carpet to start our reading for the day? Remember how we have been
keeping post-its in our just right books about details in the text?
Let students make connection.
Who remembers last week when we read Diary of a Wimpy Kid
by Jeff Kinney?
Let the students make the connection to the text.
Today we are going to be using this book and our post-its to
help us use key details in the text to determine the main idea, because

we read this book last week it can help us with our book just right
books.
Teach and Model - I am going to show you my post its and
then show you my connections to the main point of the text. I think
that the main idea of this book is to overcome any obstacle that you
might cross. I think this because Greg has a lot thrown his way but
always overcomes the battle. On page 64 (post-it) when Gregs mom
makes him take Manny out trick-or-treating with him and his friends, he
makes the best of the situation.
Guided Practice - Does anyone want to share their idea of
what the main idea of the book is?
Give the students a couple minutes to figure out their thoughts
and then ask for some examples. When the students are answering
their questions I will ask them what in the text made them think
that? And continue to scaffold them as needed.
Independent Practice - After 2 examples are given I will
dismiss the students back to their desks to find the main ideas of their
just right books. I will ask the students to write in their journals what
the main idea is and then what in the text made them think that.
Assessment
I will walk around assessing the students independent work after
the mini lesson is complete. The students will also be assessed by their
participation on the carpet.
