Discourse Communities

In this world there are several ways in which we can communicate and even identify
ourselves with certain groups. Communication today has become a need for the development and
performance of each individual. In this case, discourse communities are extremely important
because communication is the basis of comprehension between people. It is what leads us to
know, guide, express feelings, and relate to others.
Communication in the academic field is necessary in order to be successful. In my
opinion, the communication with our teachers and peers is essential because we all share some
common goals which include graduating, learning, working with others, studying, and having
good attendance. In a discourse community like this, there are some conventions to follow like
having good grades, being respectful towards others, and having integrity. If you do not fulfill
this requirements you may be faced with consequences that may lead to the expulsion from this
institution. Usually some genres shared involve essays, lab reports, research papers, and
readings. As a UTEP student you get familiarized with certain names towards locations like the
UGLC (Undergraduate Learning Center), Miner Alley, The Union; where you will be able to find
food courts, an information desk, and many more services. You also get familiarized with sayings
like Picks Up! and Go Miners Go! In order to be a member of this discourse community
you can apply thru ApplyTexas.org, pass the standardized test, and attend orientation.

Family and friends are an important part of my life because they are always there to
support me, we can communicate with each other, we learn from one another, we build strong
relationship bonds, and we have fun together. I always show respect towards my parents,
siblings, aunts, uncles, grandma or abuelita as I call her, and my friends. I try to keep in
contact with them as much as I can either thru text-messages, e-mails, social network, or in
person. I was blessed by being born into such a caring, loving, and supportive family and I had
the fortune of finding great friends.
At my professional community we always ensure that good customer service is provided.
Communication among co-workers, customers, and the boss is important because it ensures
better understanding of how things should be done. We have to follow guidelines which include
wearing our uniform (companys polo and khaki pants), being respectful, having proper
language, and reaching our sales goals. Sometimes I work either on short-term or long-term,
which basically means the shift that I have to work in, depending on my schedule for that week.
To join this community you need to apply for an open position when advertised, provide a
resume that includes information of previous jobs you have had ect. and attend to an interview if
selected.
The Church community that I go to has taught me how to be a more faithful follower of
God, how to become a better member of the Church, and that attending to mass every Sunday is
important. The church members, the Priest, children, families, and teens are very welcoming to
anyone that wishes to be part of this community. The Bible, prayers, and testimonies are always
present in every Sundays mass and the words Amen and God bless you will always be
heard. This community enforces respect towards others as well as to the Church.

In conclusion, I have learned that communication among the different communities we

belong to is a chief principal that enables us to continue to grow as an individual and as a
community member. Also, communication is a part of our everyday lives as Brian Tracy once
said, Communication is a skill that you can learn. Its like riding a bicycle or typing. If you are
willing to work at, you can rapidly improve the quality of every part of your life. Whether we
notice it or not, we all form part of different discourse communities in which we may agree that
has a broadly set of common goals among their members.
