The effect of popular energy drinks on teen heart rate. This experiment is
important because people around the world want to have energy to get around in
their everyday life. If a person drinks coffee, then it would increase their heart
rate and flow of blood giving them a longer energy spike and a faster heart rate.
The hypothesis is: If the twelve and thirteen year old students drink a half a cup
of coffee, then their heart rate will beat faster than at resting heart rate, after
drinking Gatorade and Red Bull drinks. The independent variables are coffee,
Gatorade, and Red Bull drinks. The dependent variable will be the drink that
demonstrates the quickest increased heart rate in teens. The control is the
person’s resting heart rate and the amount of time the heart rate is measured. The
constants are the PASCO heart rate monitor, computer program, used to measure
the student heart rate, and the amount of drinks given to the students.
First the persons resting heart rate is checked two or three times for three
days. Then the person is given half a cup of drink. Lastly the heart rate is checked
several times after they drank the selected drink. Eleven girls were originally
tested, and fifteen more were added to the study. The conclusion is that the
tester’s hypothesis was correct; coffee had the greatest increase in heart rate than
Red Bull drink and Gatorade drink.
