1. A lathe is set to cut bars of steel into lengths of 7 centimeters. The lathe is considered to be in perfect
adjustment if the average length of the bars it cuts is 7 centimeters. A sample of 120 bars is selected
randomly and measured. It is determined that the average length of the bars in the sample is 7.08
centimeters with a standard deviation of 0.44 centimeters.
a. Formulate the hypotheses to determine whether or not the lathe is in perfect
adjustment.
b. Compute the test statistic.
c. Using the p-value approach, what is your conclusion? Use = 0.05.
2. Fifty specimens of a new computer chip were tested for speed in a certain application, along with another 50
specimens of chips with the old design, the average speed, in MHZ, for the new chips was 495.6, and the
standard deviation was 22.4. The average speed for the old chips was 481.2, and the standard deviation was
20.3.
a. Can you conclude that the mean speed for the new chips is greater than that of the old chips? State the
appropriate null and alternative hypotheses, and then give your decision using the P-value.
b. A sample of 60 even older chips had an average speed of 391.2 MHz with a standard deviation of 17.2
MHz someone claims that the new chips average more than 100 MHz faster than these very old ones?
Do the data provide convincing evidence for this claim? State the appropriate null and alternative
hypotheses, and then find the P-value.
3. Q-1 in page 236
Two sections of a class in statistics were taught by two different methods. Students scores on a standardized test
are shown in Table below. Do the results present evidence of a difference in the effectiveness of the two
methods? (Use =0.05)
